Mission & Vision

The National Healthy Nail and Beauty Salon Alliance is working to raise the profile of salon worker health and safety issues, to connect and leverage the resources of concerned groups (including workers’ rights, labor, environmental and reproductive health and justice, and Asian Pacific Islander groups), to advocate that salon product manufactures reformulate and produce safer products, and to advocate for greater regulatory protection of salon workers.

The following are activities the Alliance is engaged in to achieve our goals:

  • Movement-Building: We will help to build the movement for nail salon and other beauty sector worker health and safety by engaging allies and groups across the country on the issue, sharing resources and information between participating organizations, and building support among these organizations for policy changes/initiatives and research efforts.

  • Federal Policy: We will advocate for key elements of the Federal Safe Cosmetics Act that advance worker health and safety in nail salons and ensure that those elements remain strong in the bill. We will also use this legislation to raise awareness about occupational exposure in nail salons, and make recommendations to regulatory agencies on how they can better serve the nail salon workforce with respect to toxic chemical exposure.

  • Industry Advocacy: We will research cosmetics and nail product manufacturers to better understand points of leverage to reduce the upstream sources of chemical exposure in products.

  • Advance a Research Agenda: We will identify key chemical hazards that must be addressed in the workplace.  We will also leverage and advocate for new research to generate additional peer-reviewed data on occupational exposures and health outcomes in order to ultimately advance greater nail salon worker health and safety.
