Salon Week of Action in Washington DC!

The National Healthy Nail and Beauty Salon Alliance and the White House Initiative on Asian American and Pacific Islanders host the second

Salon Week of Action

in Washington DC!

July 24 - 26, 2012

Calling all salon workers and owners, consumers, allies, and advocates: this is our moment to stand up for safe salons! The National Healthy Nail and Beauty Salon Alliance is thrilled to announce its Salon Week of Action in Washington, DC on July 25-26, 2012. For the first time ever, the Alliance will hold an in-person convening! Policymakers in Washington, DC have gone far too long without regulating cosmetics and workplace safety. The Salon Week of Action will be a critical opportunity to build public interest and raise the voices of salon workers. Alliance members will build connections, educate one another, and set future goals for the movement.

Tuesday, July 24th: National Environmental Justice Advisory Council Meeting

The Alliance will present on our concerns and work to the National Environmental Justice Advisory Council, an advisory council to the EPA made up of academics, community organizations, industry and business representatives, non-government and environmental organizations, tribal governments and indigenous groups.

Wednesday, July 25th: Lobby Day and Interagency Working Group Roundtable

The Alliance and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics are sponsoring a Congressional Hill visit day to raise awareness about the need to pass the federal Safe Cosmetics Act. Lobby visits will be followed by a meeting, co-sponsored by the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, with attendance from advocates, salon workers, and representatives from the federal agencies that make up the Interagency Working Group on Salon Safety: the FDA, OSHA, EPA, and NIOSH.

Thursday, July 26th:  National Convening

The Alliance is holding our first ever in-person convening! The full day convening will include:

  • A panel on the latest research on occupational exposure in salons
  • A leadership development and empowerment session with Adhikaar, Black Women for Wellness and the California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative sharing strategies to engage and organize the salon community
  • A policy and regulatory session where OSHA will share the actions they have taken in the last year to advance worker health and safety, and advocates will report on their efforts to move federal and state policy in support of worker health and safety

Unfortunately, all spaces for the week of action have been booked.
